The Strong Women of Vrindavan

Holi is considered as one of the most revered and celebrated festivals of India and it is celebrated in almost every part of the country.

Called also the Festival of Colour or Festival of Love in Vrindavan it was definitely a celebration of love, joy, fun and play.

Yesterday, Tuesday February 27th 2018, the widows participated in Holi celebrations at the historic Gopinath temple for their 3rd known in Holi celebration and only their sixth consecutive year breaking a tradition that forced them to lead the life of a recluse!

In many parts of India, widows are not permitted to play Holi (you can read my 1st Blog from 2016).

Since 2012, Sulabh began working in this direction aiming to bring them to the mainstream.

With over 1600 kilograms of flower petals and 1600 kilograms of Gulaal I was fortunate again and tried to capture those beautiful and strong women enjoying, dancing, playing and listing to music. Making their expressions of happiness, confusion and fear memories to keep.

Came home with two understandings:

  1. No more calling them “the widows”! The strong women from Vrindavan sounds much better

  2. Black & White pictures can reflect the festival of colours too
